Leadership and the Four Intelligences
The myth that an IQ (Intelligence Quotient) score reflects someone's intelligence is badly misleading. Strictly speaking an IQ score indicates how good that person is at doing an IQ test. But good IQ tests embrace a wider measure of "thinking" ability, and they commonly assess reasoning, whether numerical, verbal or spatial reasoning. In short it assessed logical
The Impact of Falling for the IQ Myth
Believing IQ is the only intelligence allows for some major misconceptions. These include the illusions that:
1) Academic performance indicates who is intelligent and not intelligent.
2) The difference in average IQs across different ethnic groups indicate which are more or less intelligent.
3) There is an evolutionary basis for men getting higher IQ scores than women and therefore men are "more intelligent". (Male and female populations both have an average IQ of 100 but the bell curve for men is more "flattened" so there is a greater ratio of men with IQs less than 70 - termed mental retardation, and over 130 - described as gifted. We could go into the whole subject of the problematic impact of negative labels but that will have to be for another time).
4) High IQ people make better leaders.
The Four Human Intelligences
A much better understanding of human intelligence is to realise that there are four basic intelligences. All are important in life and that we are all naturally high in a couple and naturally low in a couple. The four intelligences are:
Intellectual intelligence (IQ): This is really what is measured by IQ and is our analytical intelligence.
Emotional intelligence (EQ): This is a pretty well known intelligence because of the research by Daniel Goleman and others in the field. It is a measure of our ability to manage our feelings and build relationships with others.
Spiritual intelligence (SQ): This is nothing to do with religion. It is about our holistic intelligence and reflects our ability to come up with imaginative ideas and so find creative solutions - important for strategic decisions.
Physical intelligence (PQ): This is a measure of our practical intelligence. It reflects our ability to identify the details and information around us and so adjust to the tangible reality around us.
The CEO, Mark Oliver, was kindly invited to talk about the 4 Intelligences on Channel 10 recently. Click on the image below for the 8 min video clip.
For particular roles some intelligences are more important than others. For instance: IQ is particularly important for law, EQ for leadership, SQ for entrepreneurs and PQ for tradespeople. But note:
A) All are important in life, because different situations require different intelligences.
B) All can be increased, markedly if done the right way.
Correcting the IQ Myth
Knowing this immediately helps us to correct the 4 misconceptions above. For instance:
1) Academic performance indicates relative intelligence. In reality every one we meet is very likely to be more intelligent than us in some ways and vice versa.
2) The difference in average IQs indicates which races are more or less intelligent. It might indicate which tend to have more of a preference for one of the intelligences. But even that thinking is flawed as there are very significant cultural and environmental factors. (The average IQ in modern societies has increased by 30 points over the last 100 years)
3) There is an evolutionary basis for men getting higher IQ scores than women. Often this is supported by stating that men's and women's brains are neurologically or structurally different. The science shows they are not. As Angela Saini, the author of Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong, pointed out, at this point in the development of neuropsychology, it’s well-established that differences in individual neurology have virtually nothing to do with gender. She also added, “There isn’t a neuroscientist alive who can say with confidence which sex any given brain belongs to."
4) High IQ people make better leaders. EQ is a pretty good predictor of leadership ability, and since IQ and EQ are inversely correlated, the higher our IQ, the worse a leader we tend to be! We can mitigate this by consciously worked to develop our EQ as people can markedly increase theirs.
What do you think are the preferred/higher intelligences of?

MarkTwo's Work in 2018 (so far)
It's been a busy start to the year and plans to work abroad had to be shelved to accommodate work in Australia.
I've been on various radio programs and on TV a few times this year. I was made to feel very welcome by the team at Studio 10 Morning Show. The producer, Mark Dranfield kindly emailed me afterwards, "It was a great chat – the hosts were fascinated – thanks again Mark".
It was a very enjoyable experience, I was also able to share a message that's very close to my heart. For too long I've personally noticed the detrimental impact of people using IQ as the only measure of intelligence to label others as either "smart" or "stupid". I hope this helps parents to understand their child's gifts more clearly and leaders to acknowledge the unique things their staff offer the team.
IQ a myth many of us still believe, but intelligence is much more complicated

MarkTwo Health Tip - Bottled Water
Bottled water is a good option in some countries but less healthy and a waste of money in others. In 2015, 5.3 million Australians consumed bottled water in any given 7 days. But bottled water is no better at hydrating than tap water and in blind tests most people cannot tell the difference between bottled water and tap water. According to Choice Magazine, bottled water is bad for the environment and costs almost 2000 times the price of tap water.
You may want to think whether you want to purchase bottled water in Australian Capital cities. Tap water and bottled water are regulated differently in Australia with tap water having to meet much more stringent quality criteria and being monitored much more closely than bottled water. Also several bottled spring waters have been found to have less minerals than normal Sydney tap water!
