Leadership Intelligence in the modern world of terror (part 2)
It is just a few short months and we have another terrorist attack in the heart of Europe. Unfortunately "the terrorist threat from ISIS may be about to get worse. Much worse" (according to Karl Vick at least). Even if ISIS is "defeated" militarily, there is the ongoing problem of disaffected people around the world feeling that ISIS gives them a cause and "reason" to act. Things have got even more serious as ISIS and its followers have been trying to source nuclear material. Even if they cannot make a nuclear bomb the risks are very significant. Substances such as plutonium are incredibly toxic and if a dirty bomb (an explosive with radioactive material around it) was blown up in a capital city like New York, it could make a square mile of the central business district uninhabitable for decades.
We want leaders to think wisely the clue in the name of our species: homo sapiens (meaning 'wise ones'). Too often it is far too simplistic, and a good example was Donald Trump's comment after the attack in Paris in November 2015, which was loudly cheered by his American audience. He suggested that if France had the same gun laws as the USA then a number of the patrons would have been armed and might have killed the terrorists first.
Let's just imagine for a moment that say 10 civilians armed with pistols could have banded together and killed all these heavily armed terorrist immediately, saving 130 lives. Presumably, with the same gun laws and gun culture comes the same rate of gun death. Currently 2000 people die from gunshots annually in France. If they had the same rate of death by gunshots as the USA then this would rise to about 7000 per year. So changing the gun laws in the hope of saving 130 people from a terrorist attack means killing about 5000 more! I hope our leaders can come up with much better thinking than that.
There are four fundamental human intelligences and we are all naturally high in a couple and naturally low in the other two. IQ and EQ are well known, but there are also the strategic/creative and tactical intelligences. All are developable if we know what to do and all have their place.
However, strategic/creative intelligence is the way to go to the next level of thinking to deal with the most pressing and complex problems, and using an IQ or tactical thinking approach instead is bound to fail.

A MarkTwo Health Tip...
![]() |
If a 9V battery comes into contact with a metal object then a circuit is completed (for instance if stored in a metal box). This circuit flows around through the battery causing water in the electrolyte to vaporise and increase the internal pressure until it explodes. The thing to note is that coins can complete the circuit too (they are metal...) and people have suffered serious injury to their nether regions when they have put a 9V battery into a pocket with some coins in! - Explosive Power: The Last Word, New Scentist, 7 November 2015 |

Mark, it would be 4-5 years since I was lucky enough to be included in your course that you ran. I can say categorically that I am in my role now that I have because you allowed me to see anything is possible and we are all different - Shona Adams, Office Manager
MarkTwo Personality Training/ Understanding Human Motivation
This course increased my self-awareness ten-fold. Not only the materials and activities within the course but also the conversaton between members in breaks was insightful. We all shared experiences and feelings about ourselves so we could help each other with self-discovery. I don't think I would normally be willing to share so much or feel so connected to strangers if we weren't on a similar journey - Joanne Capp, National Key Account Manager, Bunzl Outsourcing Services

Quote of the Quarter
The significant problems we face can not be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them - Einstein
TED Talk - How to stay calm when under stress
You're not at your best when you're stressed. In fact, your brain has evolved over millennia to release cortisol in stressful situations, inhibiting rational, logical thinking but potentially helping you survive, say, being attacked by a lion. Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin thinks there's a way to avoid making critical mistakes in stressful situations, when your thinking becomes clouded — the pre-mortem. "We all are going to fail now and then," he says. "The idea is to think ahead to what those failures might be."

Pario Professional Talent Management Accreditation - Public Workshop
Get access to the Pario Professional which uses a highly accurate and valid ipsative (forced choice) online assessment instrument. It supports your interview, selection or recruitment processes to make them much more valid, accurate and reliable. It integrates self-reported behavioural analysis with the respondent's personal preferences, and its results have been shown to correlate very well with much more expensive Assessment Centre results.
Only 15% of your high performers are high potentials... find out why and how to spot them
Its methodology is supported by research and you will be better able to spot high performers as they are not identifiable by personality traits alone or even ability necessarily. However, those individuals who are more effective have distinctive patterns of work behaviour, reflecting the way they perceive their role and prioritize activities, and this is what Pario clarifies.
