Treating the Cause

MarkTwo Consulting works to treat the cause not the symptom. Leadership behaviour or performance can be represented by an 'iceberg':

Numerous courses try to deal directly at improving the leadership of others but that is the tip of the iceberg. This is probably a major reason why, despite a plethora of business leadership courses and hundreds of millions of dollars spent in this area over the last thirty years, leadership in the workplace does not seem to have improved significantly according to research.

MarkTwo Consulting takes a different approach. We can only 'lead others' to the extent to which we can 'lead ourselves', and we can only 'lead ourselves' to the extent that we are 'self-aware'. Therefore MarkTwo Consulting starts at the level of 'self-awareness' and only then builds up to 'leading others' in its leadership courses.

Self-awareness is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for improved performance - meaning that 'self-awareness' is a pre-requisite but it must be taken further if there are to be benefits to the individual and organisation. This approach highlights some important and challenging questions. If there is the self-awareness but not the leadership being demonstrated, then the issue is very likely to do with self-leadership.
